The authors merit congratulations on their exhaustive survey of genetic polymorphisms in a broad sample of modern populations........... the reader will appreciate the efforts of its three authors to compile a study of such overwhelming complexity and size. Surely People of India will attract the attention of geneticists, demographers, and paleoanthropologists whose research is directed to increasing our understanding of the biological diversity and evolution of the prehistoric and modern inhabitants of the Indian subcontinent.

This is an outstanding work and will be invaluable, I had hoped at one stage to have a book like this in the Oxford series I edit, but I think you have preempted the field.

           —PROFESSOR G. AINSWORTH
HARRISON, UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD, OXFORD, U.K.

Older works in Indian anthropology essentially were restricted to compilation and descriptive studies of biological and sociological parameters. Bhasin, Walter, and Danker- Hopfe give an overview of existing studies of this type and add results of their own extensive studies. They however move on to the application of modern methods of anthropology with the aim towards the analysis of causes, and the understanding of the population biology. The closing sentence the summary states correctly............" It may be concluded that to understand the population variation of the heterogeneous Indian society, there is a need for a holistic approach involving environment, sociocultural integrations and biological traits." The authors made a big step toward this goal. This book is not only a rich source of information and of stimulating reading, it represents an outstanding example of very fruitful cooperation of an Indian and German team toward a common goal.

—PROFESSOR DR. WALTER FUHRMANN, UNIVERSITY OF GIESSEN, GERMANY

‘People of India’ is an excellent compilation of the available research studies on the Indian population and the authors have opened up new direction for research for younger biologists in general, and anthropologists in particular. This direction needs to be sustained for the future prospects of the discipline.  Overall the book ‘People of India is a great effort in compilation of available genetic data and few morphogenetic traits. The authors have provided ingenious classifications of Indian population into several categories based on selected criteria and then attempted to study differentiation of Indian population using all the possible categories...........

….. the book is recommended as a source book for scholars in biomedical sciences, behavioural sciences and social sciences.
