It is difficult to ascertain who first studied human chromosomes. A number of researchers are credited with this honour (Arnold, 1879; von Winiwaster, 1912; Wieman, 1912; Painter, 1921; Hsu, 1952; Mittwoch, 1952; Darlington and Haque, 1955). However it was not until 1956, when Tjio and Levan established that human somatic cells have 46 chromosomes. The technical advances in human cytogenetics offer refinements in diagnosis. This is particularly important in genetic counselling and the investigation of foetal wastage. The use of cytogenetic techniques will expand particularly in the field of monitoring patients being treated with mutagenic drugs and the investigation of occupational and

environmental hazards.
