MANAGEMENT OF NATIONAL PARKS AND BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION IN AFRICA EMMANUEL K. BOON LUC HENS and GONZALO OVIEDO 2012 Pages: 352 Size: 180x240 ISBN 81-85264-43-0 Binding: Hard Price: US $ 60/- Rs. 1950/- (Human Ecology Special Issue No. 16)
The book analyzes the state and management of national parks in Africa. It discusses the state of ecosystems of national parks in the continent and assesses the capacity of environmental leadership and management to positively impact on biodiversity conservation in national parks. The book also examines the economic, social, and environmental performance of national parks in Africa and the role of stakeholders in the realization of the anticipated benefits of national parks in Africa. A number of key challenges facing the sustainability of national parks in the continent are identified and strategies for redressing them provided. The contributors to the book are from the various sub-regions of Africa - Central Africa, East Africa, Southern Africa and West Africa. However, to provide ample opportunity to compare the African situation to experiences in the other regions of the world, papers from Asia and Latin America are included. The book contains 24 chapters organized in three parts. The introduction of the book and the key issues are presented in Part 1 while Part 2 concentrates on African sub-regional case studies. Part 3 discusses two case studies form Brazil and Vietnam. The chapters of the book emanate from papers presented at an international conference on the management of national parks and biodiversity conservation at the University of Ghana in April 2007 organized by the three Belgian Universities (Human Ecology Department of Vrije Universiteit Brussel, University of Gent, and Catholiek Universiteit Leuven) and two Ghanaian partners, University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) and International Centre for Enterprise and Sustainable Development (ICED).
